Life Long Tragedy hasn’t been with Deathwish Records long, this is their first record with the label in fact. But what they’ve put together in this short amount of time is pretty astonishing. Hardcore is a sound that is difficult to adapt and make into your own, but Life Long Tragedy has found a way. Imagine a cross between Modern Life is War and From Ashes Rise or Tragedy; oh yeah, it’s intense. The record starts out with “Call it a Day”, a fast paced in your face type of jam, though the intro is a slower guitar intro that is sort of reminiscent of older metal records. All in all, it’s a great fade in for this type of record. Forty-five seconds into the song, you get to the bare bones of it - it’s pissed and more thrashy than it is hardcore. If you’re big on MILW, this song is right up your alley, no doubt about it. The second cut is a little more diverse. “Collecting Dust” starts out slow, almost like a sludgy screamo song, but fades into blast beats and a total annihilation of sound for about 15 seconds, then you go back into a slower, screamy style, only to fade back into a two step inspiring riff. Some bands are all over the place and it’s awful, this band is all over the place and it’s absolutely glorious.
While it combines a lot of aspects of metal and hardcore, you’ve got to be a fan of hardcore to really appreciate this record. It’s a gold mine if you give it a couple of good listens. The songs unravel and expose themselves with their different layers of sound and varying genre influences. For fans of: American Nightmare, Ruiner, Blacklisted, Modern Life is War, From Ashes Rise and Tragedy.
