I'm a sucker for documentaries, especially on a topic I know nothing about. Why, you ask? So I can learn something. I know, it's outdated and I'm showing my age, but I like to inform myself. Coming from a band that I have heard of but never heard and now having a visual aid, I am ready to review. But before I begin, let me ask one question: is it ironic for a bunch of gutter/ squatter punks to release a DVD? That would pre-suppose the "true" fans actually owning the establishment-licensed DVD player, right? Anyways, the DVD portion of this release could have been sub-titled "Night of a Million Spikes" because, boy, there are a lot of them on stage and in the audience, hair and nickel alike. Much like black metal, to the outside observer there is no difference between band and fan. The fans are up and off and even playing on the stage with the band, so who can tell? It sure looks like a hell of a lot of fun, though. The Casualties' live show is a technicolor wash of energy and abandon that is non-stop entertainment and pretty damn tight with all the 40 oz.'s considered. However, they really are a one-trick-pony; don't look for too much depth of content or musical skill. But for story-telling, they are great. Their songs are seemingly all upbeat anthems written for group vocals. The DVD splices live footage from The Knitting Factory in NYC with the members of the band talking about their history and the way they live on and off the road. Most intriguing is hearing singer Jorge document the changing landscape of New York City itself through a street tour. As he notes, "CBGB'S is gone - Coney Island High is gone - we're still here." And they are still here for a reason: dedication to a sound, a style, and their audience. This is really a release for the true fans, with a live disc of 22 songs, the aforementioned DVD, and a pretty spanking fold-out poster. For neophytes like me, I enjoyed it but then passed it to some of the squatters down the street from me who were genuinely touched by the donation.

flippinbeans They are basically the boy band of punk. And very few bands suck compared to Toxic Narcotic. Here is a handy quiz that might serve you well

Shipwreck it's MY OPINION that while they are not a D.I.Y. punk band anymore they are real punk ie they do what they want despite what anyone else thinks of em mowhawks and leather jackets has any of it EVER changed? Did they have a mohawk in 94 and wear eyeliner now (no but AFI do). there terrible to you I like em & have since i first saw em in Boston in 94, (mind you im also in my 30's), and at least there not going to go away despite how lame you think they are. They are not however my favorite band (Toxic Narcotic-and despite what you think ALL BANDS SUCK compared to T.N.) but I certainly think Defiance and the Unseen are horrible by comparisonin street punk but I really want all of you to name 10 bands you think are SOOOO much better that represent WHAT YOU THINK TRUE PUNK is. Id like to see what everyone else thinks I wont rag on it I just want to know what the people slaging what I listen to so maybe you can convince me of why your band is so much better email me fedgeisdamaged@yahoo.com (wheter bad or not only god can judge me and you) Oct 19, 2007
Albert Belle Oh! I was not aware that the Casualties were REAL punk. Is it their mohawks? Their $200 leather jackets? The fact that every song has the screaming "OI OI OI!" or singing about being oppresed by the so called "man"? Ha ha! If this band does anything at all for punk, it's giving it a bad name. No, I wouldn't consider this band to be "real" punk at all. I mean come on, how cliche and unoriginal can one band be? But hey, like what you like. I just think that they're a joke. Oct 18, 2007
flippinbeans Shipwreck, the Casualties really do suck man. A lot. Being in a street punk band does not excuse them from this sad fact. Oct 18, 2007
Shipwreck no one ever actually reads what I say. I wasn't comparing them to Dillenger I just said there not Dillenger Escape math metal so of course it all sounds similar (but to be fair all the virtuoso solo noise crap math metal all sounds the same to me). STREET PUNK not MATH METAL Of course it's a one trick pony thats why its PUNK and not METAL This place should be called Metalemo.com Cause no one thats on here but me seems to actually like REAL PUNK you all seem to be so into virtuoso metal which somehow gets lumped into PUNK. At least this band has the guts to know that there not as good as YOUR band that writes way better music and can pack way over the knitting factory in NYC and keep going for the few of us that really are into this and don't give a fuck if you think there a one trick pony as if it holds any ground anyway! Kev how the hell can you compare this shit to a band like dillinger?

its like comparing Botch to Sinead O Connor!

and hundreds upon hundreds of bands take time out to party with their fans.

stop being silly!

this band is a one trick pony and the trick it can do is outdated and pretty fucking pointless

Shipwreck Worst band ever? Not even close. This band at least has the dedication to stick with what they know insted of trying to change there sound to cater to what's popular. I admit they are a one trick pony, but thats what the ramones were too. it's street punk your talking about here not Dillenger escape math metal. how many bands take the time to hang out and party with there fans? These guys do just that! They got what a lot of bands have lost Integrity Oct 16, 2007
