I really dig reviewing unsigned bands. There's a certain sense of honesty that comes with their tunes generally not seen on major releases. I think it's the notion of truly creating your own music. Local and unsigned bands have the fleeting ability to make the music they want to make without any swaying influence from labels, investors and such. The end result is not always appealing to the ear, but certainly more honest then most pop shit topping the charts.
One Day Elliott is a punk rock band. Sure there are elements of rock n roll and even a hint of jazz here and there, but the overall vibe is very punk. I wasn't sold on the first tune of the album; I think several others would have been better placed in the first slot. Track one, "Mistake in My Design," is a slower tune, spiced up with some eclectic instruments. I really wanted to be bored half way through this song due to its repetitive nature, but something about it...it just didn't bother me, in fact I dug it. Any local band, and by local I mean England for these guys, that pulls off vocal harmonies, is okay in my book. So many up and coming bands have shied away from that vocal approach. What happened to the melody guys? One Day Elliott demonstrates outstanding vocal abilities on this album. Incredible harmonies and ear pleasing melodies separate these guys from others.
It's difficult for me, having a strong opinion on production to get into local bands albums. The production is generally pretty bad and provides little distinction between parts and instruments. It takes a strong band to persuade me to listen to their album twice, despite awful production. One Day Elliott has talent, and a lot of it. I think these guys will have an impact on their local scene and abroad, I just hope they have the balls to keep playing the music heard on this cd.
