Ok, I figured it out. Bands are coming around to literally just sell to the 14-16 age bracket, which explains why bands break up after 2 years or so. At least that's how it feels with this band, Powerspace, and their debut Kicks Of Passion. It feels immature, forced, and sounds like a pop train wreck. The album also boasts of a steady dose of an electronica sound within the diluted emo pop. Imagine a terrible, emo version of Devo, and you have Powerspace.
The issue I have with "emo" bands that come out nowadays is how it seems that they don't even try to be original or creative with their music or lyrics. It's just a carbon copy of other bands with pseudo-edgy lyrics about girls that seem like they were tied together simply because they rhymed. The music itself appears to be somewhat innovative, until I remember most bands from the 80s, and then dismiss it as a poor reincarnation of electro-pop.
From start to finish, this album is slightly annoying. Tracks like "Quarantine My Heart (Baby)," "Right On, Right Now," and "Be Aggressive" are just bland and lifeless. Almost every song left me shaking my head wondering how people could actually find this music enjoyable. It lacks substance, both lyrically and musically. It's childish and high-school-esque sound makes this album just another stereotypically mainstream friendly record given to the mall-hopping masses.
Overall, this record is a disappointment. No real stand out songs, no great message, not even a song that can really be listened to in full without daydreaming midway through. The fans of emo or alternative pop music may find this album enjoyable for a while, before the next new band comes out with another album catering to their pop sensibilities.
