I thought about writing an introspective view on grindcore and what it is to me, but I can't be sure what I think to be honest. Grindcore is kind of like that cousin no one knows how to explain to their friends; that everyone thinks they have a funny story about but no one can recall a single joke they've made. This may make little to no sense but grind has always held a special place for me in that it is unceasingly fun in every way. Absurdly hectic, difficult to listen to, at times, laughably offensive, and anyone who doesn't love it will most likely seek psychiatric consult after being exposed to it for a prolonged period. Destroyer Destroyer, out of Oklahoma City, brings this sort of messy ruckus with their summer release, Littered With Arrows.

The album manages to be abrasive, energetic, and chaotic without flinching once for time between tracks. Sounding, in my opinion, like a slightly less matured Converge, Destroyer Destroyer combines mechanics with gut wrenching emotion and rage in an array of heavy guitars with what seems to be mentally unstable percussion and sickly, screeching vocals.

Grindcore is difficult; there's not much to say about it aside from "good" or "bad." It all sounds about the same, except some sucks and some doesn't and some just rouses confusion, and there's no real explanation for how to judge it to someone who doesn't know. I feel a little guilty getting all art school smarmy and intellectual about listening to an album on which, if I wasn't looking, I wouldn't know when one track ended and another began so I'll make this brief. I really did enjoy it, and had a little trouble deciding between three stars or four. I think with some time and maturity, they just might be a force to be reckoned with, so I have to leave room for improvement; 3 stars for now. But check it out for yourself.
