Oh, wait.
Clouds.
Yeah, Clouds. Like their moniker suggests, they are wispy, aimless, and fleeting. They are more stratus than thunder as they are actually Yankees doing a Southern rock swagger. It all comes off as tongue-in-cheek and almost insulting. At times they verge into 80s hardcore which works, but then that style is gone as quickly as it came. Overall, the sound is soulless, haphazard, and sad. Being a “members of” band that they are, that label is usually code for “this doesn’t have our full attention” and it sounds like it. Like Phil Anselmo or the Beastie Boys doing hardcore, these Boston guys doing Southern rock just plain doesn’t work. This is almost as bad as The Doomriders.
Ultimately, this pretentious, ponderous collection of rock songs is enough to prompt the question: what day did Aaron Turner sign this band and couldn’t he have rested on that day too?
Oh, “Open Fire” by Alabama Thunderpussy is available now on Relapse Records.
