This originality is most evident on the first three tracks of Walk Into the Light. While the Poison Arrows LP did a great job of establishing the band, “Carrie Anne,” the previously unreleased track that appeared on the Protect compilation, is what peaked my interest in Communiqué. The first three songs on this EP continue to show a band that feels comfortable with its sound and the music is getting better as a result.
“The Sad Valentine” starts the EP with a driving and catchy beat complimented by dark lyrics reminiscent of good Alkaline Trio. “Somebody Poisoned the Well” switches the beat but otherwise continues this musical trend. With “Wake Up Wake Up,” the EP really starts to pick up but its momentum is quickly brought back down by the slower tune, “What's Been Lost.” It's not a bad track by any means but it pulls away from the rhythm the first three tracks worked to create.
Walk Into the Light ends with “Got Your Number,” which, again, isn't a bad track but it feels a bit out of place on the EP. Its opening chants of “Oh oh oh oh oh…” and lyrical simplicity give it more of an anthemic sound. It's just a bit of nit picking on an otherwise impressive EP that shows the band progressing well. This EP gets me really excited about the full-length the band is currently working on, so I guess it's done its job.
