Have Heart quote ee cummings, Neil Young, and Shipwreck in songs drawing influence from Youth Of Today vehemence, “It All Comes Down To This”-era Bane melodic interludes, as well as new school get low bands like Lights Out. Though such disparate cultural and musical influences might suggest and unfocused end product, HH synthesize a unique educated positivity - a driving sound fronted by inspirational lyrics.
Every song demands a sing along, although some tracks (Armed With A Mind, The Machinist, and the ringing album closer Watch Me Rise) promise not stop crowd participation, pile-ons, and finger pointing. The next five years will see a rise in Have Heart related tattoos - watch out for “I walk fearless because I’m armed with a mind” in banners around a skull. It’ll happen.
About Face contains the album defining line: “I must find, I’ll strive for humility.” Picture the scene: a group of young men in Boston onstage command the attention of every sweaty young boy and girl in attendance. Those watching are hanging on every word. One kid near the front has lyrics tattooed on his arm. This group of kids, collectively called Have Heart, can influence their audience in any way they see fit. With their pulsing, angry music swelling and crashing behind him, the singer reaches into himself and tells the assembled: strive for humility. “It’s time we really take a look at ourselves and start caring about someone else.”
Spiritual songs of self reliance with no attached dogma? Check. Driving hardcore with great musicianship? Check. Beautiful art and a clean, clear layout? Check. Have Heart - The Things We Carry: the best hardcore record of the year? Motherfucking check.
