I’d like to start by saying I have nothing against female musicians. Tsunami Bomb, The Distillers, Million Dead, (cough) Kelly Clarkson; all have a female performer in the mix and all have released CDs which I found fit for my collection. I have no dislike for female musicians; simply a dislike of tacky gimmicks. I can safely say most bands are comprised of male members (except for those listed above, and I have questions about Coheed and Cambria), but few and far between does a band run their gender as a gimmick. Despite all of this, I gave the CD a fair chance.

After I popped in the album, I realized most of these bands didn’t change a thing about the songs they were covering. After an opening the inside cover, I realized these girl groups were tribute bands to whatever song they were playing. I’m sorry, but Drew cries, “Hilarious!”

Overall, the CD bored me to tears. I understand it’s different, girls are playing on it (shocked face)! but after reading the foreward written to the CD, these bands want a fair shot just as any male bands who decide to play this music. Taking all these things into consideration and taking away gender bias; what the hell separates this CD from any shitty bar band who plays the music?

I’ll give a little credit where credits due, Hell’s Belles singer Jamie Nova sounds a lot like Brian Johnson; on the other hand, if you’re a woman and you can’t sing like AC/DC, you might have bigger problems than accidentally buying a shitty girl band cover CD.

There were a few funny moments in listening to the CD; unfortunately, most at the expense of the bands. Listening to a woman say, “I’ve got something to say/I raped your mother today,” when the Ms. Fits (I know, quirky, eh?) covered Last Caress. Another humorous little folly occurred when reading the Black Diamond interview bio, when they say “…We knew we had to form an all female KISS tribute band because no one had done it before and we wanted to be the first to do it.” It’s not so humorous until you skip a few pages and look at the page dedicated to Kissexy; the other, only, all female, KISS tribute band.

To be honest, I judged Girls Got Rhythm based on the same standard I would if I got an all male tribute CD, because that’s all the bands wanted: equality. Boring, 2 stars (and only because The Little Dolls did a decent job with “I Don’t Know”  by Ozzy Ozzbourne), do something new with yourselves.
