The Plot are one of those bands who don’t creep up on you.  They put it all into that first impression - and either it turns you on or you turn it off.  Their new INRI EP turned me on just as fast as I had turned off their full length, Love In The Fascist Brothel.  Actually, the Vice magazine review of that album nailed this phenomenon perfectly when their reviewer smashed the CD to pieces after hearing only the Gorilla Biscuits rip-off trumpet intro.

Luckily INRI forgoes any mocking of one of hardcore’s sacred cows and simply delivers with one great new tune, INRI, a stoney and stilted tune about “that disgusting king” creeping the night and spreading his seed.  The track is post hardcore with a smooth dance groove, fun heretical lyrics, and great trumpet flourishes - positive attributes which are brought out a second time around in Nick Zinner’s terrific Beck-inspired remix.

So what have we got: a killer track which almost redeems this band wholly from my once-sour opinion of them, a party-making remix by the most talented of the YYYs, a gender questioning David Bowie cover (which I can really take or leave), and it’s on a tiny hip label from San Diego with great (albeit faggy) art.  I say go for it.
