The Myriad play a low tempo, emo rock, sometimes with dancey indie beats, but most often with slow and careful building percussion.  the singing is relaxed and melodic, with decent lyrics ranging from standard emo death/darkness imagery to a more literal style.  Both styles center around relationship material, and coupled with the slow tempo and careful melody I’ve decided to play my part as jaded critic and locate it in the dreaded ‘emo’ genre of stripped down indie rock.

There is nothing sharp edged or rough about this album.  The entire thing just kind of flows by you like a band on a raft that slowly gets brought to you and again leaves on its way downstream, nothing jars the listener, nothing challenges you to keep listening.  This is double-edged.  Since the music is extremely tight and well put together and the lyrics are personal and sung in key with decent, pop-oriented melodies, it is in no way a poor piece of musicianship.  Unfortunately, the other edge is that it is incredibly hard to stay with it all the way through because nothing varies enough to register.  What I’m trying to say is that I guess it would be well-accepted by people more interested in this kind of music, but for me it lacks a dynamism that I look for in music of any type, something changing and exciting that keeps you involved in the songs and taunts you to engage with it.  This can be all sorts of things; I’m not just talking about screams and power chords because those can be the same generic mud too.

All in all, this is a well-packaged, well put together effort from a band with talent for nice sounding melodies and who retains a specific musicianship which drives the sound they want.  Unfortunately, it can be boring at times and often lacks the diversity necessary to retain an active interest.
