How does this happen? How is a collection weaker than just one of the sum of its parts? Easy. The Endless EP was a hot slab of something new and raw, and inspired artistic expectoration with great art and the best song on track one, side one. Unearth was still wearing its hardcore influences on the outside, sounding like a Swedish Poison The Well, long before Poison The Well ever went to Sweden, and the effect, short, hard, covered in metallic ink, was profound. Here, the Endless EP is squelched in between five almost entirely unlistenable live recordings circa 2004, and the very rough 1998 Above The Fall Of Man session.
Buy this if you have to, if you love Unearth as so many do. But be aware, if you go old school and pick up the Endless EP on vinyl or in that neat little silver inked CD case, when the new-jack, Headbanger’s Ball kid’s are all clutching Our Days... you can smile silently to yourself, and make a mental note - one more thing you know that they never will.
