From the first word of “The Inception” to the final ‘goodbye’ on “What a Pity,” New York, NY’s Last Perfection draw you in and enthrall you. Drawing Conclusions is, if you are a fan of the this boundary where metal and hardcore coexist peacefully and perfectly, exactly the record you want to hear. It is hard hitting without being dull, mindless, or repetitive, and it is intricate and interesting without sounding like friendless highschoolers trying to win respect on the fretboards.Their early-Poison The Well meets Converge metalcore is punctuated by gorgeous melodic interludes, reminiscent of Seven Angels/Seven Plagues. And as a fine shine on an already polished apple, Drawing Conclusions was produced at Kurt Ballou’s (Converge) God City Studios and the big man himself lends his guitar to the standout track, “Obtuse and Obscure.”

Drawing Conclusions is perfectly played and amazingly cohesive, a surprising feat considering the insane amount of line up changes these kids have been through since their 2001 debut. Last Perfection, by my very amateur and unofficial tally has lost/replaced at least seven members, and yet their sound is so fully realized that it sounds as if they could have all grown up together playing everyday. There are so many interlocking riffs and rhythms that to teach so many new members all the ins and outs seems suicidal. But I guess if Shai Hulud can do it...

They lose points for the ambiguity of “What a Pity.” When vocalist James says, “laugh and point, the angels pissed on you” with regards to “faceless freaks,” is he really making fun of the handicapped and disabled, is suicide for the disabled really being advocated? It’s either an anti-PC backlash or Last Perfection has some sort of hidden agenda of eugenics. I think its probable that its the former, but its still kind of off putting. A subtle smear on a great record; a great album for everyone except, apparently, those “blessed by god with that smile that never fades.” If that’s not you, buy this now.
