The Chariot is the new name in astoundingly perpetual brutality. The Chariot is also the new band fronted by ex-Norma Jean singer Josh Scogin, who left NJ after recording “Bless the Martyr and Kiss The Child” and saddened legions who worshiped Norma Jean’s spastic crush. Luckily, Josh came back, posted some new tunes on hxcmp3.com and word of mouth turned The Chariot into a house hold name within weeks. The Chariot re-recorded all three internet hits for this, their proper debut. Expect manic mood swings, from a lone organ to bludgeoning HC and back in a matter of seconds. Josh howls, screams, does a sick death metal impersonation, and sings some obtuse but catchy lyrics.
Personal favorites, “My closet holds no bones” from the aforementioned “Some day in the event that mankind actually figures out what it is that this world revolves around, thousands of people are going to be shocked and perplexed to find out that it was not them. Sometimes this includes me.” and “The Devil lives in Atlanta, army surrounded” from the new version of “And Then, Came Then.” This is the next step in the musical evolution from Norma Jean’s “Bless the Martyr and Kiss The Child.” The musical similarity between the bands is almost unreal, as the only shared member is the non-instrument playing frontman. Both bands share a penchant for long pauses, repetition of sludgy riffs until you think they’ve lost track of what they’re doing, and the sudden switches of tempos and time signatures. The Chariot will kill you.
And just for fun, one last time, here’s the title of track two again. “Some day in the event that mankind actually figures out what it is that this world revolves around, thousands of people are going to be shocked and perplexed to find out that it was not them. Sometimes this includes me.” Get it.
