I've been advised by a friend who dubs himself "king of the indies" (aka emo-kid) that he went to high school with some of the guys in this band and that they are huge assholes. He claims, and i quote, "they can kiss the hairest part of my ass." From that stunning praise i have to say, this is a good cd. Regardless of what my san diego scenester friend believes about them personally, even he admits that they are a good band. I would call them an indie-hardcore band, with a slightly sloppy sounding style which has almost a rockabilly influence, but still remains punk rock through. It kind of reminds me of the way that bands like the Blood Brothers or even fear before the march of flames organize their songs, keeping things well put together but not necessarily intuitively ordered. The lead singer has kind of a sloppy screaming voice that comes off as somewhere between vaux and refused, and stays in this scream the whole time. They also incorporate an indie-rock feel with some minimal breakdowns and a kind of bouncing bassline that sounds a little like some of the white stripes stuff. There is even a murder city devils vibe in here with the use of keyboards for layering. Overall, i am pretty impressed with this stuff. Its eclectic and sloppy and yet well-put together all at the same time, without becoming boring at any point or being able to be pinned to one band or scene's sound at any time. Maybe they are assholes as my friend-in-tight-pants claims, but they are a good band, and this is a good cd.
