Alexisonfire's second release is a measured step away from their older, more hardcore oriented genre-bending project. They play a brand of hardcore-crossover music, incorporating a screaming singer and some thick breakdowns and riffs, but instead of the now familiar emo-blending of bands like Thursday, Taking Back Sunday, and From Autumn To Ashes, they fuse it with a more progressive rock sound, reminiscent of antenna-era cave in. Actually, the Cave In similiarity is quite strong, although they play a distinctly harder version of prog rock. There is significantly more of the spacey, layered riffs than the older release, which may disappoint some older fans as it consumes some of the more hardcore style, but the two singer formula remains, and the hardcore guttural vocals as well, so not all is lost on that front. Overall, i am very impressed with this album. They manage to blend the melodic diversity of cave in with a heaviness which is more compelling to my ears than any straight prog rock project. It is obvious that they are very musically talented as well, and the lyrics remain good to well-written throughout. I recommend this.
