I've heard people say that this band is similiar to Saves The Day, but that's absurd. Think more along the lines of Brave Saint Saturn and Phantom Planet and you'll have Gatsby's American Dream, a five piece rock band out of Seattle, Washington. This release, "In The Land of Lost Monsters" is their third release, after their last release, "Ribbons and Sugar" sold almost four thousand copies. Their lyrics may not be all that creative, especially with the line "If I try hard enough, i can make myself believe in almost anything," and their songs may not be the most articulate or ground breaking. This band just has something that I can't quite put my finger on, nor do I want to. It's like that feeling you get when you wouldn't rather be anywhere in the world doing anything other than what you're doing at that moment. That's how this music makes me feel. Maybe it's just my personal attachment to simplicity, but Gatsby's American Dream is like warm apple pie. The last song on this album, "The Dragon of Pendor," sounds almost similiar to a Maroon5 song, which leads me to believe that I might be hearing it on the radio someday. I wouldn't be surprised if all of a sudden they blow up. They are, afterall currently on tour with Acceptance, a band who went from being unheard of last summer to taking the country by storm this time around. To keep this short, "The Land of Lost Monsters," is nothing spectacular, but I'm not about to toss it in that pile of albums I never listen to again either. If you're a fan of Phantom Planet, you'll most likely be a fan of them.
