I saw Underoath play once or twice bought their initial record, “The Changing of Times,” and never really got into it. Well, alright, the first song, “When the Sun Sleeps,” was pretty kickass, but the rest didn’t grab me. With “They’re Only Chasing Safety” Underoath takes a huge step up in the catchy, listenable, well produced and interesting rock department. This record is catchy in a Taking Back Sunday sing-along way, and as a bonus, only one song “I’m Content With Losing,” contains heavy handed references to Christianity. Maybe it’s the new vocalist, but already I think this is head and shoulders above the last album, and better than most similar sounding bands I’ve heard recently. Chugging guitars, soaring background vocals, the ubiquitous keyboard - none of it is unique to Underoath, but the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. They stick with the screamo blueprint for the most part and their finished project holds up to the elements, making headbobbing is a must. The sixth song, “It’s Dangerous Business Walking Out Your Front Door,” adds some angelic choral voices to the mix, but for the most part this is straight ahead, driving, Thursday-ish emo rock.
