This is the reissue of the original 1997 release “give them rope” from the pioneers of technical hardcore/metal. Remixed and repackaged, the new version is, yes, still an old album, but the new artwork and sound quality are completely worth grabbing this one, especially since the old one is out of print in 2001. Dubbed noisecore sometimes, sometimes math-rock, sometimes metalcore, they are an interesting band to totalize into a genre. They are similar musically to bands like Converge, Botch, and Dillinger Escape Plan, and most following bands owe Coalesce a huge hand in the formation of this as a genre. They blend hardcore, metal, rock, and thrash together in a fast, punishing assault. They are also ridiculously talented musicians, with all kinds of time changes, crushing breakdowns, and did I mention fast. Vocals are deep and guttural, screaming the whole time and fitting perfectly into the dynamism of the rest of the music. This was one of the ground breaking releases for hardcore, and it fits well into the current scene, and it was their first full length…pretty amazing. If you like Dillinger, Botch, Converge, or any other big metal-core band and haven’t heard coalesce then you need to pull your head out and get it. I’m not sure how persuasive this is going to be for the casual softer listener, but basically, I don’t care. this is an awesome album, pick it up.
