The Artwork on this album says it all for me. The front of the fold-out insert has three people crying and holding eachother. All I need is someone holding me, and I know exactly how they feel. Slow, steady, and emotional, Pedro The Lion continue their legacy of soft-rock emo meanderings on the new jade tree release. Undistorted, semi-acoustic guitar, slow rolling basslines, some synthesizer, and soft simple drumbeats accentuated by a calm and smooth lyrical style run through each song on the record. It is well-produced, and well put together. I have several problems with this band and this cd in particular. The first is that it pretty much blends into one big bland ride. The way he delivers the vocals without any real fluctuation or change in tone makes it impossible for me to detect the emotion behind the lyrics. Coupled with the slow, methodic pace of the music, this cd presents itself more as an invitation to take a siesta than a musical experience. Two stars because it is well put together and they must have an audience who appreciates what they do, but I am not impressed. At least the insert spared the lyrics and had a cool picture.
