Killradio is an intensely political rock band with a pretty distinct style. I would best describe them musically as a cross between Anti-Flag and the (international) Noise Conspiracy. The songs are pretty laid back on the tempo, even pulling a somewhat funky feel on some songs (Pull Out, and Ad Jam) and some ska (Classroom Blues). The vocal style is the normal punk rock talking/singing style coupled with a scream thrown in for emphasis once in a while. He even beat boxes on a song (Penis Envy). The big problem I have with the record is the lyrical quality. The message is good, with a socially conscious message, but the lyrics are often so weak that they make me a little embarrassed to feel the same way. I’m not saying they are wrong, just that I can see it as something completely unpersuasive to anyone on the other side of the issues just because of how weak they are. For instance, they cry “It’s revolutionary to want this thing called peace/it’s so revolutionary it blows my mind, all the way” (Pull Out). I don’t disagree, but I don’t see that statement being anything but dismissed. Maybe I’m too cynical. Overall though, this is a pretty good cd, and I am excited to see what else they can create. They have a very unique musical style that I couldn’t really pin to any one genre. They are sincere about their beliefs and have a pretty good web page (
www.killradiorevolution.com) which I recommend checking out if only to see the opening page with a picture of GW Bush and the words “King George: Off With His Head.” Either way, I’d say the cd is worth checking out, but not the greatest thing I’ve heard.
