No. The Dopamines are not The Copyrights, though one might have trouble telling the difference if they didn’t shout “dopamine!” in the third word of the opening track on their self-titled effort.
Anyone looking for good, modern pop-punk knows they will find it on any Copyrights record, and The Dopamines come through with a similar promise of quality on their debut. On the second track, “Molly,” it becomes evident that fans only need to learn a few lines for each chorus and sing along relentlessly to an extremely catchy effect.
It has unarguably been done before, but there is only so much these pop-punkers can do with three chords. What’s important is that The Dopamines do it with a passion and love for the sound, and it comes through in the production. They also mix things up a bit with a raspier, more aggressive track in “Beer Telescope.” But who are they kidding? This is Ramones-esque pop-punk about drinking, growing up, and falling in and out of love, with a great closer in “Navigation Point.” Enough said.
