Tallahassee punks Lipona made a good first impression last year with its debut, Atlas. On it, the band rocked a modern melodic punk sound reminiscent of the now defunct band Much the Same and the following-in-its-footsteps Michigan rockers The Swellers.
Still unsigned, the band is trying to stir up some attention by doing the free thing. The band's latest effort, a five-song EP titled Pigeonholed, is available for free download through the band's Myspace page, and it's really good.
"Beginning the Dynamite Era" opens with some moody guitar work and then bursts into melodies over standard punk riffs. Throughout, the band provides some solid guitar solos and background work similar to that of A Wilhelm Scream, and the best solo comes on this opening track.
"Shooty Hoops" serves as a change of pace - an acoustic track outlining the hardships of trying to make it as a band. It is sad to see the band already this jaded with lines like "We don't stand a chance," and realizing that exploitation of the audience is the only way to success. Then again, they're awesome and still unsigned, so maybe they've got something to be jaded about.
