Bats and Mice is one of those bands that no matter how hard you try not to while reviewing them, you have to mention that they’re ex-members of so and so. Daron Hollowell (vocals, guitar) played in Four Hundred years, as did Ash Bruce (drums). Ben Davis (bass, vocals) was in the Sleepytime Trio, Milemarker, and put out a solo album. David Nesmith (guitar, vocals) was also in the Sleepytime Trio, as well as Maximilian Colby, Men’s Recovery Project, and the Rah Bras. Impressive, huh? The best way I can describe their sound is as indie-pop/rock. Some songs have a darker tone with matching lyrics, while the others are more upbeat. One thing that I really like about it is the diversity between the songs, and the fact that three of the members all contribute with vocals really helps give each song a distinct sound. Some of the best vocal moments on this album are when all three sing together and harmonize. There are a few songs on here that really stand out, my favorite being track eight, “Enough For You”. The lyrics to that song are really great as are the meandering guitar and bass lines that flow beneath them. However, there are a few songs that aren’t as great. There are a few songs that when I’m not in the mood for, I get very tempted to go to the next track, but overall, the good outweigh the bad to make a very enjoyable debut full-length from Bats and Mice.
