What's so great about Unwritten Law is that they are such a versatile band. The new record showcases many different styles. "Elva" contains less straight forward powerpop songs than the self titled album (Interscope 1998), and more metal-oriented material. Fortunately, they never take that to an extreme. I'm not a big fan of metal, but Unwritten Law's harder songs (at least some of them) are enjoyable. Still, I'm more into the softer, poppy side of Unwritten Law. Remember the song "Cailin" from the self titled album? Well, "Elva" offers a couple of equally strong follow-ups, namely "Sound Siren", "Rest Of My Life" and "Elva (It's Alright)". "Actress, Model" is a little more "bouncy" and also definitely one of my favorites. "Elva" is good album, but not as good as the self titled album, in my opinion. I think it's great that the band plays a lot of different styles, but the "new" aggressive thingy just ain't my cup of tea.
