A guitarist and a drummer. That is Victor Bravo. With Sky Full of Messages, they've proven once again that bass really isn't necessary if you play loud, distorted music. This EP is an excellent gaze into the talent of these two men and with each release, they can only continue to evolve in their sound.
It's hard to define what this band is; it's definitely not to be considered anywhere close to the White Stripes, but I'm not exactly sure I would classify them as a "punk" band either. It takes a listen to define what they are, but it's not something that can be explained. The EP contains seven tracks, six of those tracks are complex and dynamic and then track seven, "Long Face," destroys the momentum that the EP created. This track, with its changing tempos and bizarre lyrics, ultimately proves Victor Bravo to be mere mortals, not a beast on a sonic rampage.
I am curious to know how the band recorded this EP, whether they used a program like Garage Band or a recording studio. The songs tend to have a hallow sound, a small echo that doesn't distort the songs and encourages the D.I.Y aesthetic. Victor Bravo has three self-produced releases and I would like to see what they could do with focused time on the music. This EP has potential and would a stellar release without "Long Face."
I've never heard a D.I.Y. album that I didn't like, though sometimes I wish I hadn't turned the volume up so loud. Victor Bravo is solid and you certainly couldn't go wrong with supporting them. Maybe the avant-garde nature of "Long Face" escapes me, maybe I like simpler things, or maybe they just had one bad track. Either way, it's good.
