This is definitely a heavy record. Unfortunately, I don't have much else positive to say about it. It takes a lot for a straight edge band to win me over and choruses like "Fuck you/Fuck this/ Fuck your mother fucking life," really aren't going to do it. Not that I have anything against straight edge in general, but it just seems that most of the bands in the genre have adopted pseudo tough guy personas and are more about trying to prove who's tougher, rather than promoting a good, clean, healthy lifestyle. There are bands out there doing this and doing it well. Liferuiner is not one of these bands.
Taking Back the Night Life, the band's first nationally distributed album, is some of the worst hardcore/metalcore/whatever I've heard since Terror. I know there're plenty of people that go nuts over this type of album and this release isn't going to be any different. As unfortunate as it is, this tough guy crap keeps gaining popularity for whatever reason while more honest, powerful hardcore falls by the way side.
Complaints aside, this is definitely one of the heavier records I've heard in awhile. If the lyrics weren't so inane, the record would be a lot more bearable. Dare I say, it might even be a good record if you didn't have to put up with the lyrics? I can't abide by this type of stuff anymore. When more quality hardcore records get little to no recognition while bands like Liferuiner rise in popularity, there's seriously something wrong with the punk scene. But I think we all knew that.
