Why is it Chicago is one of the Meccas of good music? Something in the water? Or does all the snow force musicians to be creative? I wasn't sure what to expect from this LP at all, but from the first two seconds, I was hooked; it's some kid screaming something into the mic before the music starts and that got my attention. Shot Baker is straight forward punk; something in your face; something you wouldn't be ashamed to admit you enjoy. This is all apparent when you listen to the mix of the CD; crunchy guitars, low-end bass, and a drum kit that sounds like it's in a garage - it all works perfectly. I imagine this is how they might sound live, except more brutal. There isn't anything unnecessary throughout this whole CD; each song is tight and with a tempo that a lot of punk has forgotten.

I can't find much fault with this CD; from start to finish it kept me interested and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for an old sound in a newer band. Tony Kovacs' vocals reminds me of A Wilhelm Scream's Nuno Pereira, but a little more limited in range. They also remind me of Chuck Ragan of Hot Water Music. I'm not beating Kovacs in any way, his vocals are perfection for this band. Chris Gach on the drum kit knows his way around; each beat fits each song and while the beats are simplistic, it's been a long time since these beats have been used. I can't complain about guitarist John Krohn; he knows his guitar and keeps everything moving. Nat Wright also keeps things interesting on bass, adding just the right touches in each song.

I'm not even much of a lyric person, but the chorus' had me chanting along while I was driving around. Each song sounds straight from Kovacs' heart and so much of the weight is carried in his delivery. This is definitely a CD to listen to while driving, exercising, or beating the crap out of someone. This being Shot Baker's second full-length, they carry the seasoning of being in a band and have found their sound. I can't wait to hear anything else they release. Go buy this CD if you like straight up punk with no extraneous parts.
