There is something about the new coming of "pop punk" that just has me lost. Bands like Fall Out Boy and Paramore just seem to make me sad. That is why this band, He's The Hero, who is definitely following the footsteps of Paramore (with their female lead vocals), just leaves me disappointed. A mix of pop, screamo, and punk that seems to just be a carbon copy of what is popular now. A indie sensibility and a whole lot of pop sing alongs that lack substance are what I find within this small demo, and none of it leads me to think that anything else they will put will be much more than just bland pop.
Now, the thing that gets me is that this band probably can become very popular among the mall-going youth of today that buy their punk rock at high prices next to the food court. But to me, that's what it is - not punk rock, or pop punk, but the soundtrack of a generic generation that loves trends. The band has some catchy songs, but they really fall into the category of pop music with distortion. Then again, most music now has been moving towards a poppy/catchy sound with a hint of the now mainstream "indie" feel.
Bascially, this demo is a sign for me. A sign of things to come. Maybe I just don't want to see the scene fall this way, but then again, maybe it already has. Pop melodies with a punk influence have become a big part of the music scene today. I'm sure the fan base will be there as long as the music is cool. But this generic, cookie-cutter punk rock is easy to listen to and easy to forget when something new comes along. Overall, the demo is not worth searching out, but if you are a fan of Fall Out Boy or Paramore, check them out.
