There is something about "indie pop" that is either hit or miss. Most often the songs seem whimsical and light, which is the whole reason the word "pop" is placed in the definition of the genre. However, some bands have really understood how to make catchy pop songs with a strong indie mentality. Pomegranates are on their way, but haven't arrived quite yet. Their debut EP, Two Eyes, has five songs that show some definite potential, but the EP itself is one of those albums you listen to once and then you don't hear again for a year.
The songs are somewhat repetitive and predictable for their genre, which is the one problem I have with the genre in general. Many good bands that play what is considered indie pop usually stick within the sound in such a way that the music is too similar in structure to other bands. Most of the tracks on this EP were catchy for the first minute or so, but then tend to draw themselves out a bit. Like I said, this release feels like a rough draft of sorts, like a good starting place and if the band can progress from there, then they have something good.
Another slight hindrance was just the length in general; I understand it's an EP, but I felt like I wanted more. When they release a full length, there will be enough tracks to really feel out the band and have the ability to fully grasp their concept and music. But for now, Two Eyes is a good start, but to really set themselves apart they are going to need to define themselves first and then write music. If you are already a fan of indie pop, it's a good band to add to your collection, but they're not the best band to use to get into indie pop.
