Courtney Love Selling Kurt's Songs... To Martha Stewart?

Posted by Archive Bot on Wednesday, December 7, 2005 at 8:24 AM

An article in London's Sunday Mirror claims that Kurt Cobain's widow and all around disgusting, drug addled, freehole, Courtney Love is selling a quarter of Nirvana's back catalog to homemaking crook Martha Stewart for 70 million pounds (that's over 121 million american dollars to you gringos). The article claims that Stewart is looking at the purchase as an investment. No word on what Love sees the purchase as. I'm guessing she sees it as a mountain of fresh Peruvian nose candy that would make Tony Montana jealous.

Even I can't make this shit up. Read the article for yourself here.

ACLeroK Courtney Love is a piece of shit. I would've capped myself in the head too if I had to wake up to that every morning. Dec 7, 2005

Irish_Spanky See this sorta stuff is just stupid. Its like Michael Jackson owning all the Beatles back catalogue. Im not a massive Beatles fan or anything, but I still dont think someone else who had nothing to do with them should be getting any money for their work.

Its also gay how Dave Grohl and Krist Novoselic (sp?) are being fucked over this whole thing. But I'm sure thats been covered many times before..

The Reverend Sub-Zero I'm wondering what tracks are being sold, and how cleaning-nazi is going to use them. Dec 7, 2005
RCProAm12 She wont "use" them.... anytime they are played or sampled she will get money... her 121 million dollar investment could possibly turn into BILLIONS in proffit Dec 7, 2005
RCProAm12 She can also sell the rights off of certain songs and grant permission for others to record them or use them in commercials and shit like that. Dec 7, 2005
Mike <3 Oi Thats just not right. Dec 7, 2005
ACLeroK Those song rights will never turn into "BILLIONS" in profit. They'll make a nice chunk of change but you're stretching it more than just a little. Comparatively, Michael Jackson's entire collection of music rights including the Beatles songs plus much more (including his own) are worth about $450 million. Dec 7, 2005

RCProAm12 The profits can definitely reach a billion dollars. Remember, we're talking about how much money the catalog could generate for the owner for years to come- "worth" is how much someone would pay for it NOW. Nirvana's catalog is a nirvana movie and it's soundtrack away from making billions, not to mention re-releases, DVD's, Biographies, radio play(satalite and FM), samples and soundtracks (all of which can profit and be repeated for music listeners and life times to come).

Also, Your approximate 450 million dollar figure for the Beatles catalog combined with Jackson's is a little decieving- first of all; Jackson's back catalog will never recover the value it's lost over the last 10 years AND Jackson has done nothing with the Beatles catalog for 2 reasons- 1) the surviving Beatles have just enough legal recourse to give Jackson another legal headache and 2) for the backlash he would recieve from the Millions of Beatles fans, as well as a public that already can't stand him.

As a side not I think we can all agree on- To hell with Jackson, Love, and anyone else that would take money and profit for music they had nothing to do with- those royalties should trickle down to family members of the band and writers once the musicians die off.

For those who are dim, that was a joke.

And to those who are upset at the owners of the rights to songs they had nothing to do with. Guess what, it's the music BUSINESS. It is a sad fact, but it is a FACT. There is a business side to the "art" and that's just the nature of the beast. Were it not for the business aspect, many of us would never hear a great many songs we now call favorites. Double edged sword.

P.S. how dumb do you have to be to not get that joke I made earlier? Seriously!

Once again, you bring up the Beatles. Where the fuck did I say I didn't like anything the Beatles have done? In fact, the only fucking thing I stated was that I didn't consider them priceless. And I stand by that, because if I owned Jackson's music library and someone offered ME $450 million dollars for the rights to them, I wouldn't fucking think twice before selling. That fucking hardly reflects something priceless and it has nothing to do with what I think of them as artitsts. I own 5 Beatles albums which I still listen to. And Thriller aside, everything else Jackson has done has been overrated pop bullshit. If you don't agree, either way I'm entitled to my own opinion you pretentious fuck.

I still don't understand what you're being such a fucking prick about though. Or do you always make up bullshit by twisting other people's statements around to be a little bitch?

It does reflect the way you think of him as an artist b/c a bright individual would auction off the rites to the music, I mean come on, I'm sure an auction would garner a higher selling price than some random offer. Plus everyone knows you never take the first offer. It's obviously worth more than that to them, they aren't starting with their ceiling bid. You are a silly goose.

Dumbest arguement ever. It has nothing to do with how much I think they're music is worth. Fuck, I'd sell it for $100 million, give half away and would still be just as happy as if I had sold it for $450 million. Either way it's way more than enough money any one person needs to be happy with.

You guys are completely taking my statement the wrong way. Saying their music isn't priceless has absolutely nothing to do with musical ability. When you're talking about whether or not something is priceless you're talking about value, which has nothing to do with whether you like to listen to something or not.

Fucking internet and everyone's desire to turn every little thing into a big fucking personal deal.

Agreed. Plus Incesticide is great, their poppiest outing by far. But some fantastically fun "grunge" songs on it.
