The Comas
with Andy Herod
The Comas are one of Vagrant Records’ more recent signings and are yet another band - along with acts like The Hold Steady and The Lemonheads - that are further serving to diversify a label that made its original mark putting out records by early emo heroes like The Get Up Kids and Hot Rod Circuit. But The Comas are different. They come from a more indie rock background and have been consistently receiving positive reviews over the course of their four album career. Our writer, Sean Kosner, had a chance to sit down with lead singer Andy Herrod at the Beat Kitchen in Chicago while the gang was on tour. I also had a chance to sit in on the interview as well and ask a few questions.
The Copyrights
with Fletcher and Luke
So if you don’t know the Copyrights yet…what the hell? Get on it. Go buy a CD. Anyway, I sat down with Adam Fletcher and Luke from the Copyrights at a bar here in Chicago. To kind of keep the continuity I noted the parts I couldn’t hear (because of bar noise/music) and put some random off-shoot discussions in brackets.
The Devil Wears Prada
with The Band
Just before the Ohio natives in The Devil Wears Prada were about to release their second album, Plagues, I had the chance to have a conversation with them while they stopped in Chicago for the Sounds of the Underground tour. The topics included the new album, touring, being Christian and the most important of them all, Chipotle.
The Gaslight Anthem
with Brian Fallon
The Gaslight Anthem recently released their four-song EP, Senor and the Queen, a follow-up to their debut Sink or Swim, which took my top spot for best albums released in 2007. Listen to either release and you’ll hear some of the most exciting music currently coming out of the punk scene. I got a chance to talk with singer and guitarist Brian Fallon when Gaslight was in Chicago on their most recent tour with Dead To Me and The Draft. They’ll be on the road again this February with The Loved Ones.
The Methadones
with Dan Schafer, Mike Soucy, and Toby Jeg
Once again, I got the chance to sit down with yet another great pop-punk band, the Methadones. I met up with lead singer Dan Schafer and drummer Mike Soucy at The Beat Kitchen in Chicago and this super long interview was born. The Methadones just released their new record, This Won’t Hurt off Red Scare Records. Toby Jeg, operator of the label, joined us for the interview.
The Receiving End Of Sirens
with Andrew Cook, Alex Bars, and Brendan Brown
I took a drive up to Baltimore from the D.C. suburb that I call home to catch the first date on The Receiving End of Sirens’ headlining tour for their second album at the Ottobar and spend a little time talking to the guys. As I walked through a hidden door and up the stairs of an old Baltimore house that felt like a bomb shelter, the guys were waiting for me at the top of the stairs in a room that felt like it housed members of the Civil War.
The Snake The Cross The Crown
with Mark Fate
Equal Vision Records is becoming more and more known for its diverse lineup as well as its stellar list of releases from that lineup. With some of my favorite albums arriving on EVR this year (Dear and the Headlights, Circa Survive, Modern Life is War, etc.), it’s no surprise that The Snake The Cross The Crown’s new record, Cotton Teeth, grabbed me from the first listen. The band swung through Chicago on tour with mewithoutYou, Piebald, and Manchester Orchestra a while ago and I had a chance to chat with drummer Mark Fate about the sound of the new record, his plans if music doesn’t work out, and how he used to sleep on the floor in order to prepare for a life on tour. Here’s our conversation.
