Rescue

Interview with Al on Nov 30, 1999 by Archive Bot

Thanks to Mike Cubillos and Al Rescue. Check the guys out on tour now and their new album "Volume Plus Volume" that comes out on May 28th. For more info check out www.rescuedotcom.com.

PB: Who are you and what do you play?
Al: I'm Al and I sing and play guitar for Rescue.

PB: How did Rescue meet?
Al: Brian and I were playing in bands together since we were 15. I met him through his cousin, Dave. Our old band, My Complex, used to play shows with Juice and Sean's other band, Wafflehouse.

PB: Rescue was formed "out of need". Obviously the need to play music, tour, meet new people, record, stuff like that. Why for you guys is that a need and not a want?
Al: I'd have to say we all really thrive on playing music. It's the only thing we all have that we can completely rely on.

PB: Why were your previous bands not fulfilling this need?
Al: Certain members in the other band just weren't ready to make the sacrifices we were. They were unsure of the obstacles I'd say.

PB: What is the most important thing about your live show?
Al: Probably keeping the attention of the audience. Having fun playing and making new friends aftwerwards is important.

PB: Do you have any pre-show rituals?
Al: Not really as a band...some of us stretch...sometimes we'll give a "whoa bundy!".

PB: What is your favorite song off Volume Plus Volume?
Al: I really like "Like Spaceships" and "Word from the Man", but I'm very happy with the whole record.

PB: Ok, so why should everyone go out an pick up the album May 28th?
Al: I think Rescue has a refreshing sound that should keep kids interested and the record comes out the 28th so it would probably be best to get it then.

PB: You've also got a split out in June with Grayson, what made you want to do a split and why Grayson?
Al: They asked us to do it. They're good friends of ours. We had time. We went to Clava Studios in Chicago to do it one Sunday and had a super-fun time in the studio with those guys.

PB: What's another band you'd like to do a split with?
Al: I'd really like to do a split with Choke, from Edmonton, Alberta on Smallman Records or Moneen, Toronto, also on Smallman. There's a lot more but those are pretty high up on the list.

PB: What do you guys do during your long van rides?
Al: Long van rides are either spent sleeping, listening to music, or reading. Making phone calls too.

PB: What is your favorite city to play in?
Al: I can't honestly say there's not a favorite city. We've made a lot of friends all over the place and we have fun everywhere we go. My favorite cities to visit while on tour would have to be Quebec City, New Orleans, LA, Toronto and St. John's, Newfoundland so far.

PB: What city would you like to go to but haven't gotten the opportunity to yet?
Al: Well we still need to get out on the west coast and play California, Nevada, Washington, etc. I'd also like to hit western Canada this year and eventually get to Europe and Japan and stuff.

PB: You guys were just in Toronto, I think, and you played there before at the Pine Room in Oakville. What do you think about Canada?
Al: We love Canada. Canadians are so nice. Toronto is an awesome city...we just played there again a couple weeks ago and had cops nearly shut us down. But they got two cd'sS and took pictures holding our guitars and rocking out with the rythm section. It was sweet. We hit Toronto and Oakville last summer as well...we had a lot of fun... Oakville kids are super nice... we stayed with our friend Kenny (Moneen) on that tour. Yeah... Canada is a blast!

PB: You guys just headed out on tour, gimme one crazy, funny, stupid, whatever story about something that's happened.....
Al: We played a church and a girl approached our merch guy and asked how she could get in his pants. He then went home with her and they may or may not have engaged in a certain act 7 times. He did, however, take a can to the next show.

PB: Something about Rescue that no one knows, but that they should know.
Al: South Jersey knows that you can't fuck with us. Ha Ha. Just kidding....long story.

PB: Ok, when was the last time you cried or made someone cry?
Al: I almost cried missing my girlfriend, Alysonne, yesterday.

PB: Had a shower?
Al: 2 days ago. I'm on tour right now.

PB: Had to borrow money?
Al: Long time.....

PB: Laughed at someone else's pain?
Al: It probably happens all the time in the van.. I guess I don't keep track though.

PB: What do your parents think about you being in a band?
AL: Personally, my dad, I think would have loved to hear about the things I'm doing, but he died in 1999. My mom has no problems with it. Everyone else has very supportive parents on varying levels.

PB: What is Rescue up to this summer?
Al: Right now we are on tour until July 3rd. Sean and Juice play in Waffle House who will also be touring during the summer. I'll, hopefully, be working on my solo record. We plan to tour again in the fall.

PB: What is your number one goal being in Rescue and what are you guys doing right now to try and achieve this?
Al: I'd would think our number one goal is to make a connection with as many kids as possible. We love playing the music we do. The best way to connect with people is to play in front of them. We work very hard. We love to tour. We plan to tour 7-9 months out of the year. Hopefully we will connect.......
