Hot Water Music
Interview with The whole band on Nov 30, 1999 by Archive Bot
I'd like to thank Blue Ghost Publicity and all the members of Hot Water Music for their cooperation in getting this interview done. Pictures courtesy of epitaph.comPB: The hardcore movement is really beginning to take shape in a new way and recieve more recognition. Did you ever think you would be sharing the stage with a punk rock fixture like Bad Religion?
HWM: It is definitely a trip, but something we've always hoped we'd be able to do.
PB: The difference between hardcore bands of the past and present such as Hot Water Music is that you focus more on social commentary and make the listener have to think. What are some philosophies you try to get through in your music?
HWM: We're not a very political band, especially in lyrics. There are a few songs in which some social situations are addressed, but not many. As far as philosophies, I would have to say thinking for yourself would be the most important.
PB: You guys recently released a split with Alkaline Trio on Jade Tree. How did that partnership come about and whose idea was it to cover some of each other's songs? Have you been pleased with the outcome and response?
HWM: We've been great friends with the Trio for a couple of years now, so when Jade Tree approached us about being part of the split series, it wasn't really a tough decision. The reponse has been amazing and both bands are very pleased with the outcome.
PB: From Dog House to Some Records to No Idea and now to Epitaph.... Do you think you've found a permanent home? What does Epitaph offer that you couldn't find in other labels?
HWM: No Idea will always be a label that we work with on certain projects, but it's really starting to look like Epitaph is where we'll be for quite some time now.
PB: How is the music writing coming with the new album? Where do you see the new record taking you? Do you have a name or release date yet?
HWM: The new record will be out on October 8th...same shit, different record.
PB: Did the name "A flight and a crash", the name of your most recent album spook you out after September 11th at all?
HWM: No, because the actual song has nothing to do with aeronautics at all. It does make one feel a little uncomfortable, though.
PB: What do you think of Less Than Jake's Pez obsession? Does Hot Water Music have any obsessions, and have you had any Pez parties with the guys yet?
HWM: Beer!
PB: Lastly, thanks for talking to punkbands.com. What are three albums besides "A flight and a crash", that you think people should go out and buy?
HWM: Everything by F Minus.
