Days Away
Interview with Keith on Nov 30, 2001 by Archive Bot
High five to Cameron at We the People Records and thanks to Keith Days Away. Check out their EP The Feel of It and for more info their website www.daysaway.net. Do it.PB: Who are you and what do you play?
Keith: My name is Keith and I sing.
PB: What is the deal with Days Away?
Keith: The deal with Days Away, hmmm...,…..we're just hanging.
PB: How did you guys all meet?
Keith: Middle School.
PB: Why We The People Records and how did you hook up with them?
Keith: We The People Records…….. it involved a car accident.
PB: You guys have been defined as "sensitive, impassionate, rock-based guitar pop", which to me seems like a fancy way of saying emo. What is your definition of emo?
Keith: I always thought "emo" meant "emotional".
PB: What genre would you classify yourselves under and do you think it helps or hinders you , in the way of stereotypes?
Keith: Everyone will be pushed into genres I think. Let's see, Weezer is considered emo. I can't figure out if it is the music being true that is considered emo or just the scene of people who enjoy it. Personally, I don't mind being classified in any way. Whatever people want to consider us is cool. Our goal is to be making music that people just like. And we want to be passionate about doing so.
PB: I read that you guys are unique because of the "sincerity that only 18 and 19 year olds have to offer". It seems that more and more these days bands are starting out younger and younger. Was this something that you always envisioned yourself doing?
Keith: I'm sure we have all wanted this for a while.
PB: Because of the fact that you are young and starting to be successful younger, does it ever worry you that you might not have longevity in this career?
Keith: I think that Longevity in this career has to do with how hard we want to work, just like in any profession. Of course the product of our work is key, but the way I see it is that we have an early start and many years to grow.
PB: What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?
Keith: What do I see myself doing or what do I hope to be doing? In ten years I'll be 29. I'm sure that if I can support a family playing music in ten years, that's what I will be doing. If things don't work in this career, I'll still be playing or maybe I'll be teaching my kids how to play. Who knows……
PB: You guys know that there is an "indefinite amount about love to find out" and you use the "confident but cautious approach"...what is that approach?
Keith: Being confident without being cautious seems dangerous to me.
PB: You have links on your website to bands like Midtown and the Starting Line, what are some bands you would love to tour with?
Keith: The obvious are all of the bands we are friends with. There is nothing better than that. Finch, Midtown, The Starting Line, Taking back Sunday, Something Corporate, Reel Big Fish, Tsunami Bomb, Don't Look Down, Static Lulluby, This Day Forward, Further Seems Forever, The Polish Mafia, The June Spirit, Hello Goodbye, Astoria, Suburban Legends and probably a ton more. And I'm sorry if I forgot some friends. We all think it would be cool to tour with Rival Schools as well, but we don't know them so I couldn't put them in the list above.
PB: Bands you are listening to right now?
Keith: Lately, Frou Frou, thanks to The Starting Line, Coldplay, Travis, Ours, Jump, Little Children, Coheed & Cambria, Ghosts & Vodka, Radiohead, Rival Schools, I've got this crazy mix of Bjork songs that is pretty cool to listen to, the amazing song Harry Hood by Phish, Hampton Comes Alive, Pedro the Lion, Desperacitos, The Cardigans, The Roots, Slick Rick, The Cure, The Police, Led Zeppelin.
PB: When was the last time you broke a promise?
Keith: I promised someone I would clean up the ends of this sandwich that I left in the bathroom after they made it for me. I did not clean up.
PB: What is your favorite word?
Keith: Washing Machine
PB: Word association. Ancient…
Keith: Eye.
PB: Ring.
Keith: Promise.
PB: Beautiful.
Keith: Mom.
PB: Cheese.
Keith: Pizza.
PB: Purple.
Keith: Sometime.
PB: Ok, what is the closest you've come to being arrested?
Keith: Oh man, you caught me at a bad time. I would normally have a good time with this question, but I'm being rushed. I have never even come close.
PB: You guys look like you could be in a boy band. If I told you you had to be in one which one would you pick?
Keith: It's obvious. O-Town.
PB: What are you guys up to for the rest of the year?
Keith: Touring this summer.
PB: Any last comments you have..................
Keith: Check out the website.
