Deftones

Interview with Stephen Carpenter on Nov 15, 2005 by Archive Bot

Punkbands.com very own Stian S. got the chance to have a Web interview with Stephen Carpenter from the Deftones. Discussing their latest B-Sides And Rarites album, the forthcoming new album to be released Spring 2006, guest appearances and why “they're pretty dumb”....

Stian: When selecting tracks for a compilation CD such as a greatest hits etc, there will be different opinions on which songs that should make the final outtake. What made you decide on which songs to be included on your newly released b-side and rarities album?

Stef: Mainly the idea was to put some songs that haven't been heard at all, or at least that's how it started out.

Stian: Some fans wonder why obvious classic b-side tracks such as Teething and Can’t Even Breathe was left out...?

Stef: Yeah, I agree, I was wondering the same thing myself. Man, we're pretty dumb. lol.

Stian: The song Black Moon, when was it recorded and which album was it made for? It was one of few songs I haven't heard before.

Stef: We did that song during the white pony sessions. I was active doing kush, my other band. so, naturally we collaborated and had some fun doing some music together. side note... kush does still exist, it's just under construction and constraint. lol evil powers that be are jammin it up.

Stian: Will the forthcoming album be your last on Maverick? Are you going on as an independent band?

Stef: Nope, we'll still be with Maverick after this album. unless, they say Deftones suck and cya. lol.

Stian: Since Chino is fairly busy with Team Sleep these days, does this affect the band (Deftones)?

Stef: Absolutely. Chino has over-extended himself completely. We are sitting here right now as I speak, still waiting for his vocals to be finished. wow!

Stian: What is the reason for the push back for the new album? The fans have eagerly awaited this album for quite a while now, and delays only makes the expectations even higher. Do you fear that the album will not live up to the fans expectations?

Stef: Part a of your question see previous questions answer. Part b to your question is, no. I feel when it's complete it will as always be a quality set of songs to enjoy.

Stian: Since the time spent recording in Malibu, has the material taken another direction musically? Because of the delay?

Stef: A lot has changed since Malibu. Chino changes the music around even as i speak right now. crazy part is, we already did the music and he's still trying to change it around. lol.

style=Stian: Will there be any guest appearances on the new album?

Stef: Yeah, there will be a couple superstars in the mix. lol.

Stian: Which song do you wish you had written? (From any band, any genre)

Stef: Meshuggah

Stian: Which of today new and upcoming bands do you think separates themselves from the crowd?

Stef: I really don't know. I don't really pay any attention. But not cause i don't like any new bands. there's to much chaos in real life to keep my attention

Stian: Who would you consider touring with?

Stef: I'd play with just about anyone. music is without a doubt the fuel of life. being able to play it and do it with others around the world, a privilege.

Stian: Thank you! I appreciate all the feed back on those questions.

Stef: Thank you.
